Torgen's speculations sparked another thought.

What if the thematic verbs were mere plural/duration forms of the athematic verbs (singular/punctual)?

We could imagine 'CVC conveying punctuality with CV'Ce/o conveying duration.

And a parallel phenomenon in nouns.

'CéC-s, nominative singular; Ce/o'Ce/o-s, nominative plural, i.e. CoCés.

Because stress-accent on the root syllable indicated the singular, in many nouns, the plural was taken as the basis, producing CóCos.

Of course, many details would need to be worked out.

Any takers?
