I'm thinking it as a loanword. Perhaps Are:s < *Erwent through some another IE language. Just a guess.
 
What's the stem of Are:s? Are:- or Are:s- ? Genitive is Areos.
 
Any link with Briareo:s (gen. Briareo:) or Amphiaraos?
 
And with Armenian Aray?

Well, *h1er- would give Greek er-, so I don't think so.  Also, I don't
think _Are:s_ is a loanword, as it looks thoroughly Greek to me.

On another note, is there a suffix -vat in the Sanskrit word?
