It's one that gets discussed frequently on Asatru sites - Jacob Grimm
mentioned a pillar in his work on Teutonic mythology (I'm assuming it
is the "effigie columpnarum") and from there people have guessed that
this passage might refer to something similar to the Irminsul.
As a result people argue back and forth about which god was associated
with the column in the German mind.
Would it be alright if I used your translation (with citation of your
name) in an article I am putting together on this very matter?
