Yes, this possibility is listed in Sihler section 151, page 151, though the
etymology of this word is much discussed. The vowel is predictable from its
phonetic context, so that is of no importance.

The other -sul words are even less clear. Exsul was taken by the Romans as
ex-solum (away from one's ground), hence the spelling -xs- for the
earlier -x-. Praesul is unexplained.

Peter
