since we all know that indoeuropian studies started with samskrit it
has vertually been assumed that samskrit is one of its main branches.
but many believe that samskrit is a grammatically reconstructed
artificial language and not the region bound actually spoken language
of a particular lingustic people-society.vedic is also different is
acknowledged by nirukta, panini and sayana. hence there must be a
spoken language group which prevailed in north and northwest
provinces of india between 1600bc and 600bc. this first date refers
to buzkoy inscriptions by hittaits and mittanis where words like
dashruth, mitra varuna appear for the first time and 600 bc is the
time when we can farely say that non samskrit spoken languages are
attested to in late vedic books.by 300 bc we have pali canon and
ashokan inscriptions. ardhamagadhi comes a little later.we must be
having a connection between the spoken languages in india and in
europe during that period. i agree that even paliand ardhamagadhi
were not spoken languages but their must be their prdecessor
languages and we may be having their traces in pie or in spoken
europian languages. gopal chippalkatti
