I wonder if the *i of *-ikó- isn't an allele of the thematic vowel (at
least when it forms diminutives of thematic stems); the suffix would
then be analysable as *-o- + *-kó-. Of course if the reduced quality
*-i- arises in metrically weak positions in the first place, the stress
will normally remain on the final syllable.
