swallow < PGerm. *swalwo:n < (possibly) *swalGwo:n

and, if so, it may be related to Greek alkyó:n "king-fisher".

Now, that kingfisher happens to be one of Vennemann's pets, which he
divedes into al- + -kyó:n, where the later can be related to a
reconstructed Proto-Vasconic *kanuntz "owl" (loaned into German via
Nordwestblock 'Kautz' "owl") and the former he assigns, for no
pareticular good reason, the sense "water", thus "water owl" (because
it dives for prey, as do owls). Now if the first element is actually
*swal- (which has given its name to 'salix' "willow", too, supposedly
because of the color), at least "blackened owl" would make a little
more sense (its other name in German is 'Eisvogel', old 'isarno',
which is also the word for iron, supposed from a Basque word
meaning "shining" because of its colors; iron and grey-black match).
