Cancel this *k^w- solution. Jens's suggestion that the BSl. 'magpie'
word is a loan, and the reconstruction *kWersnah2, are infinitely better
and amount to a compelling etymology which explains all the little
problems that mar other proposals (the Slavic *(v), the long vocalism,
the Albanian trill, etc.). It's so nice that I think it should be
published -- how about a brief etymological note somewhere, Jens?

As for the vowel, we have:

(1) *ers > *e:r (a pre-Albanian compensatory lengthening I proposed)
(2) *e: > *a: (merger of inherited vowels)
(3) *a: > *o: (Proto-Albanian rounding of stressed *a:)
(4) *o: > o (loss of quantitative contrasts in Common Albanian)
