Thank you very much for the reply, I was beginning to despair.
For some reason, and I am not sure why, I had the idea that it
somehow related to a word meaning "protector".

I'm at work and without any texts, but I recall some author pondering
whether it might be related to the continental "Sax-not"........
which I believe was translated to mean Sword-Companion or Saxon-God.
Does this seem to make any sense at all?
