Yes, it is borrowed from Germanic. Estonian borrows the same word
as 'edi' but it's meaning is wife rather than mother. The original
word for Finnish mother was/is 'emo' from Uralic.

Perhaps another candidate may be 'apple', *ap(a)laz. I think I read
somewhere an attempt to explain this from Uralic *pola, a round
berry or fruit. Finnish has 'karpola' cranberry, and puolukka,
whortleberry.
