The common noun was also <álfr> (in "standard" Old Icelandic
orthography), with secondary length. This OIc. lengthening before /l/
plus a labial was regular (as in <álpt> [a:lft] 'swan', <álmr> 'elm',
<kálfr> 'calf', <sjálfr> 'self' etc.).
