Because pronominal stems had enclitic and non-enclitic forms.
Sometimes ending with *& as the core vowel, sometimes with
fuller *a. Both *a and *& merged to *o during Vowel Shift but
*& yielded e/o alternation in the paradigm while forms with *a
did not.
