The difference is that vowel + m# never lengthens, so
claiming that for the gen.pl. would be merely silly.

vowel + sonorant + s# _does_ lengthen (e.g. in the oy-stems,
like sakha: and Sappho:), so it's fully justified to
investigate whether the length in the ins.pl. comes from the
same soundlaw.
