It was ME pese [pe:z&] (pl. pesen) < OE pise ~ piose (pl. pisan),
borrowed from Lat. pisa (a by-form of pisum, pl. pisa; with peas the
distinction between sg. and pl. is notoriously problematic) <-- Gk.
pison ~ pisos.
