Golab (sorry, I just happen to have his book handy) takes
another Ptolemaic tribal name, Suobenoi, as the primary form, later
modified to Stavinoi, Slovinoi, etc. and derives it from
*s(u_)e-bho- "ourSelves" (like the Suebi or the Samnites)with
the "Glory" and "Word" meanings being later misinterpretations.
Is an idiosyncratic nutty idea, or could there be something to
it?
