Hi Peter,

Thank you very much. I am going to look out for these
books. I have here with me two books from Winfred
Lehmann: "Historical Linguistics: an introduction" and
"Theoretical bases of Indo-European languages". I have
not read them yet, but I know that his views are quite
polemical, as I have been told. Have you already read
these two books?
Thank you again for the help with the bibliography.

Klaus.

Hi Klaus

This question comes up from time to time. There are
several books much more
up to date. Meillet inevitably omits the insights and
consensus that have
developed since his time. You are far better off with
a book Beekes
(Comparative IE linguistics), Baldi (An introduction
to the IElanguages) or
Szemerenyi (introduction to IE linguistics). The last
one is the most
important. Although it draws unpopular conclusions,
it is still an
excellent source of reliable information.

Peter
