Not a typo. An Iberism. Spanish nieve, Portuguese /nEve/, Catalan neu (=
/neu/ not /nEu/ [*]) (also Occitan and a number of Italian dialects) point
to /nEve/, a byform of /neve/ under the influence of nebula (/nÉvOla/).

[*] In Catalan, /e/ > /E/ and /E/ > /e/.
