The origin of WestGermanic denomination for coin ( MHG pfenni[n]c, OHG
pfenning, pfenting, Dutch penning, Eng. penny) is not sure. It can be
seen as a relation to Latin "panus" ( Stück Tuch) because it was a time
when people paid with such stuff.

So far my dictionary about this word.
