On North American Natives, "gvogar", which may be merely an alias for
the grammatical rollercoaster that is Alex, states:

Well, yes. There was a lot of literal genocide going on in the past. Now
the norm, at least in Canada, appears to be a more subtle indirect
genocide both by non-Natives and Natives alike. Nonetheless, the
younger generations are being heavily influenced by the non-Native
world through television and internet. And who wants to be stuck on
a reserve anyway? So gramma mutters something in Inuktitut cuz she
can't speak English and you're like "Yeah, whatever gramma." There's
a sense of detachment from one's own culture and language because
you've adopted English and that's all you know. Was it because of
genocide in this case. No. You could be from a perfectly loving, safe
family but you are still detached from your own culture because you
never were taught it as a kid.
Ah, y'know, that reminds me of my swedish gramma. She never taught
my dad Swedish. She never thought the need to because she was
in Canada and English was the language. She didn't speak Swedish to
grampa because he didn't know Swedish either. It was only later when
I was born that she taught me some Swedish. Perhaps it was out of
regret for losing her Swedish, or perhaps because I wanted to learn.
At any rate, I can give so many stories of language abandonment, it
ain't funny. This has nothing to do with genocide. It has to do with
a people deciding on a whole to abandon their language for another
for whatever reason.

kepa de ren. >:) In my case, I wouldn't care. I pledge no allegiance to
any language because, as I had said, they are all my own language in my
view. I can't help it if you can't learn languages well enough to be
intelligible (as per below).
