We discussed it on Cybalist once -- check the archives. There's nothing
specifically maritime about <hello>. As for similar Germanic
interjections, OHG halô is known to have been used to attract the
attention of a ferryman, but it's probably the imperative of <halôn>
'fetch, draw, pull'.
