By the way, there's a useful book by David Denison (1993, _English
Historical Syntax_, London: Longman) where the origin of the English
periphrastic perfect (with HAVE and BE) is discussed at length in a
whole separate chapter (Ch. 12: Perfect) with examples of use and with
references to other literature on the subject.
