The stem is anáks.- (nom. anák, acc. anáks.am etc.), and therefore always a
closed syllable.

There is almost a conspiracy on the part of Indo-Iranian to not reflect
roots of the structure *oC- (presumably mostly *h3eC-, although instances
of *h1oC-, *h2oC- or *h3oC- cannot be excluded). The root *okW- in
Indo-Iranian is always extended with /s^/ when it's full grade, and it's
always zero grade when unextended (-i:ka- etc.). If we look in Pokorny, we
see no Indo-Iranian reflexes for *oketa: "Egge", *obhel- "fegen", 1. *od-
"riechen", 2. *od- "Widerwille, Hass", *ok- "überlegen", *ol(-e)-
"vernichten", *oner- "Traum" and *oreu- "Darm"(??),; and we have only the
closed-syllable variants of *od(e)go- "Stengel" (Skt. ádga-) and *om(e)sos
"Schulter" (Skt. ám.sa-). The root *owis "sheep" is probably *h2ówis,
*h2awyós rather than *h3éwis, *&3wyés, so Skt. short /a/ is both from the
oblique and irrelevant.

The only usable examples are then *op-es- (Skt. ápas- "work"), *on-es-
(Skt. ánas "Lastwagen"[*]) and perhaps aratnís "elbow" (*ole-).

[*] = Lat. onus, -eris "Last" (onustus, onera:re). Pokorny also connects
Greek anía [~ Aeol. onía] "Plage", ánios "lästig", which is doubtful. I
see no pressing semantic reasons to include IEW *ono-/*on&- "schmähen".
