Germanic or Celtic etymology?

Hi ,

can a Germanic etymology be given for the tribal names Cimbri, Tuetones
and Ambrones? If they are Celtic words, doesn't that imply that these
tribes were of Celtic origin?

According to Sextus Pompeius Festus, who was abridging a lexicon by
Verrius Flaccus (d. AD 14), Cimbri derived from the Celtic word Cimber,
meaning brigand

and Festus also says of the Cimbri, "Cimbri lingua gallica latrones
dicuntur" (the Cimbri
are called the Brigands in the Gallic language). Do you think this
implies that the name Cimbri was given them by the Gauls, the Cimbri
themselves being Germanic originally?
But then that would mean that Cimbri wasn't their original name, and that
they had previously had a Germanic tribal name, unless they were Celtic.
Festus also says that the Ambrones were a Gallic tribe. Pliny says that
the Cimbri called the Baltic morimaruse ("dead sea"), which contains the
Breton words mor (sea) and maro (dead).
