which cognates here? the cognates are given for "stäbchen" not for " to
cut"; or do I see it wrong?

aham... yes, the explanation fits because once the Pfal was "cutted" not
"whittled", "carved" or simply broken:-)

The question from my side is if we can get in Latin an /a/ from an older
/e/. I suppose the answer is "yes".
