No, the words have not been edited or scholars must have noticed
this. However, I did make a mistake in saying Bulgarians wrote about
themselves (this is true about the Protobulgarian inscriptions, I
mixed them up). The source here are early Byzantine paintings of one
of Bulgarian Khan Krum's battles with Byzantium and of the victories
of Bulgarian Tsar Simeon. The text of the painting (inscription? not
sure on the terms) has the name "bulgari" written clearly with a
stress on the first syllable. (see At. Bozhkov, "Miniatjuri ot
Madridskija rykopis na Joan Skilitsa", Sofia, 1972, picture 9,
picture 31)

I see, but I don't think Bulgarian scholars have been so careless
about archeological findings. It is easy to see, for a scientist, if
something was added later.

I thank you for the question. It helps make things clear, even to
myself.
