George, I was expecting some ideas of specialists in Latin regarding
"veteranus" which is clear accepted as a derivative from "vetr-".I try
to find out what meant this suffix "-anus" a tall. My books here does
not help me too much since (wonder?) Romanian has not kept the Latin
sufix "-anus". At least in all suffixes given by Rosetti as coming from
Latin, "-anus" is missing or I did not found it until now.

We have for instance Romanus, Africanus, which are compunds of Roma
+anus, Africa+anus and the sufix , this sufix shows someone coming from
a place . On this way should be very easy to say veter+anus= one who
come from "veter".
The association with veteranus= ex-soldier with "veetr-" seems to be
made missing something better.
There is no bit truth in "mãrar" derive from "mãr" but if we don't have
anything better, we will try to explain it trough "mãr."
The second thought is the expresions which are to find in Albanian and
Romanian regarding "let one come back to vatre".
The tirth one is that veteranus is a late apparition in Latin. Piotr can
say what he wants, but Rome has had soldiers long time before this word
appeared and there has been no "veteranus" known.
For this I ask myself if the "apparition" of this word can be connected
with the time as the Romans entered the Balkans?
There are some work more I have to do, but this sounds as a very
interesting path.

Now to Rom. "bãtrân". Have you took a look at Albanian? If not, let us
see some words:
vjetak= einjärig ( looks like vãtui from meaning, doesn't it?)
vjetër = old
vjetërim= Old age, (Alter, Veralten, Abnutzung, Verschleiß)
vjetëron= to grow old ( veralten lassen, alt machen)

I would like to know if the vjetër is a metathesis form of vjetrë here
or not. I ask it because beside "vatër" in Albanian there is "vatrë"
too. Maybe Abdullah will tell us here something more about the
derivatives of this word.
But it doesn't matter too much. The only "hacken" here should be the "n"
.But this is not a problem as one think it can be.
For these reasons the ex-soldier does not become anymore old in
Romanian, but there is a absolutely normal evolution within the Rom.
language with no help from any "veterans".
