It looks like a vertical/horisontal system perfectly made for
diphtongation:
Horisontal:
i-e > ie
e-a > ea
u-o > uo
o-a > oa
Vertical:
i
u
> ü
e
o
> ö
The problem remains "ä"; it looks like it doesn't want to fit the
vertical system.
