But don't neglect the background: this "ban" must
be seen - in a way or another - in connection with
Avar, Bulghar and Hungarian occurrences. (Even the
speculation Bayan > ban makes sense a little bit,
if we take into consideration what an important
Avar kagan Bayan was and what a major role his
and his successor Avars played in preparing inroads
for the Slavs that later on were known as Croats.
Besides and by the way: it is not quite known what
kind of an impact that circa 1/3 million of people
in Dalmatia played to the proto-Romanian population
that were dislocated by the Avars immediately after
Bayan's death and driven even across the Danube...
If we take in consideration that that populace
was by and large a Romance-idiom speaking group.)
