Czech pán. From Polish presumably Lithuanian ponas, Ukrainian pan.
The Old Czech is hpán, which seems to point to *gUpa:nU, a form
somehow connected to South Slavic z^upan (< *geUpa:nU), of, I'm told,
ultimately Iranian origin.
