In Polish this is a loan I guess, other ways Piotr should have had
explained to you from the begining that is a Slavic word , this is not a
Slavic or Avar word. The word "jupân" in Rom. is the older one. The
reborrowed word from Slavs iz "jupan" with "/a/ and not with /â/ and it
was borrowed I guess from Polish in middle age trough the Wallachian and
Moldavian shcolars who learned in Poland. ( in fact almost all learned
in Polen from the wellknown Rom. "cronicars").Maybe Piotr can tel us
about the Polish form of the word since DEX means that the new one "
jupan" is from Slavic "ZupanU", the feminine form "jupãniTa" is from
Slavic "jupanica" but not from Polish. It won't fit historicaly since in
the Middle Age as this word exprimed already a certain status of the big
"bojars" there was no "slavic" anymore but there have been already the
specific Slavic language of today. This is an intersting thing as well as
the name of one of the witnesses by the testament of Karl der Grosse was
a certain "Walah", thank you for remembering it to me.
The old word "jupân" with femine "jupâneasã" is given by DEX with
unknown etymology.
