An opposition between circumflex and acute is attested independently
in Greek, Balto-Slavic and Germanic (e.g. -õ: > Goth. -o:, -ó: >
Gothic -a), and I think there can be little doubt that it's inherited.
This means that PIE can be reconstructed with acute vs. circumflex
intonations, or, alternatively, that it can be reconstructed with
vowels in hiatus. If we choose the first option, we should write the
o-stem Dsg. as *-õ:i, the Lsg. as *-õi and the Npl. as *-oí. If we
choose the second option, we must write them as *-oei, *-oi and *-oy.
