Why doesn't it sound Germanic? Why not *xaid-u-z 'rank, status,
honour, person' (Eng. -hood, Ger. -heit, ON heiðr) with a derivational
ending? The most natural formation from this base would have been
*xaid-i:na-z 'man of high rank'.
