I'm looking at a book (Roy Andrew Miller, 1971) whose title
leaves little doubt as to the author's opinion, "Japanese and the
Other Altaic Languages." Section 1 "Pronouns" of Chapter 5 "Lexical
Evidence" "attempts to demonstrate that the [Old (eighth century)]
Japanese pronoun system is such that the relationship of Japanese to
the Altaic languages, and its common descent together with them from
proto-Altaic, can no longer be questioned".
I have no idea if he's accomplished his aim or not, but it's
certainly something aquila_grande should look into.
