Ned,

Hold on and let me check what Cavalli-Sforza has to say ("The History and Geography of Human Genes").

Ah yes, in Chapter 2 (Comparison with Linguistic Classifications) he has some interesting figures:  Fig. 2.6.1 is a world map which shows geographic distribution of the 17 linguistic families (taken from Ruhlen, 1987).  I-E covers much of Europe and a goodly part of India and Pakistan.  Asia for the most part is labeled Uralic-Yukaghir and Altaic with the eastern most region of Asia shaded Chukchi-Kamchatkan.

In Fig. 2.6.2 Cavalli-Sforza presents a Genetic Tree and compares it with linguistic families and superfamilies  The Nostratic Superfamily consists of Afro-Asiatic, Indo-European, Dravidian, Uralic-Yukaghir, Sino-Tibetan, Altaic, Eskimo-Aleut, Chukchi-Kamchatkan & Amerind.

Hope this helps,
Gerry

Hi Gerry,

In which work has Cavalli-Sforza done that? He is not a linguist but
a geneticist- I was unaware that he originated any linguist groupings
himself. Anyway, I thought his conclusions grouped Japanese and Ainu
speakers more closely genetically with North Asian populations,
rather than with Austronesian-speaking populations, which he grouped
with other South Asians.

Regards,
Ned
