The thing that puzzled me was that Trithemius had come up with a name
Wechtam, close to ON Vegtamr, Vígtamr and Valtamr on the one hand,
and Georgian Vakhtang and Armenian Vahagn on the other. Now where did
he get that name from? Did he study ON sources? Or Georgian or
Armenian ones? If we admit the possibilty that he had come across a
Latin translation of Snorri, he would have translated Vegtamr to
*Wegtam, so that won't work. I know the matter of the authenticity of
Hunibald was settled in Trithemius' lifetime already, when he
wouldn't show his sources, but supposed only part of it were
fabricated, wouldn't that also explain his reaction?
