Trithemius was an interesting figure, and a brilliant man in his way; a pioneer of modern cryptology, among other things (you may have heard of his "steganography"). And he was by no means the only eminent Humanist to have produced fake historical documents -- the practice was widespread, and to some extent regarded as justified, especially when people made counterforgeries to shoot down other people's forgeries, or when the purpose of the forgery was to make the history of their country or the family tree of their patron look more gorgeous.
