Around 10 BCE, into what is now Thuringia. And they were Bastarneans
coming from Pannonia and present Romania, which explains the Negau
helmet.

The sources that first launched the idea that Snorri's account was to
be taken literally were:
Jon Galster: Guldhornenes tale
Claus Deleuran: Illustreret Danmarkshistorie for Folket.
Stein Jarving has written a book about it
http://www.eutopia.no/Volvehex.htm
and Thor Heyerdahl, in his last years, pushed the idea too, and
published two books about it, the titles of which escape me.

Unfortunately, most of this is in Danish or Norwegian. They also
differ in many details with the theory I outlined above, and for
which I must bear the responsibility. I suggest you look for
references in the original debate in cybalist, I can't remember them
all, there were many. Try from around message 6000-7000 forward.
