I do not think it is illogical to assume that and EARLIER *a was retained because it was lengthened by a "laryngeal" (earlier *e > *e/*o; earlier *o > *e/*o; earlier *aH > *a: > *a; earlier *eH > *e(:); earlier *oH > *o(:).
