It isn't "the old form in Latin" but a RECONSTRUCTED proto-form (*awis-dH-je-, a compound verb, cf. Gk. aistH-). The *s was assimilated to the following voiced sound and then lost in pre-Latin before historical times. It could be voiced in this particular environment only, and so can't have anything to do with Rom z in <auzi>, which is prevocalic. They are different unconnected zeds at different times.
