Judging from the effects you have reported, I suppose it's either the experiment described and duiscussed by April McMahon, Marisa Lohr and Rober McMahon ("Family trees and favourite daughters") in Renfrew and Nettle (1999. _Nostratic: Examining a Linguistic Macrofamily_) or something very similar to it. If so, I know what to expect.
