Why should the result be either *bdos, ptos or petos?

Actually, if you pronounce two stops after each other, there wil
unevitable be some vocalic element between, because the nature of the
stops - the first stop have to open befor the next stop sounds.

So- in this case the difference between ptos and p@... will be
minimal.

The result will inevitable be a flipping from the one realisation to
the other - therefore both petos and btos/bdos is likely have been
exising simulateously in early IE, and without any clearcut rule.

Therefore proposing that ptos never did realize itself, is unlogical.

It is also unlogical to propose that ptos was realized, and then
petos was restored.
