Subject: [tied] Russian Ivan < ?
> Can Russian Ivan come from a Church Slavic *JUvanI or *JUvanU ?
The actually recorded OCS form is <ioan(n)U>. The East Slavic form seems to derive straightforwardly from *[j]i[w]anU, with the vowel sequence resolved into a glide-vowel-glide-vowel string without empty onsets. No need to posit a faux-Proto-Slavic ancestor.
> The vernacular expected form of surname must be Ivanev or Ivanov?
The latter.
