I'm not sure: it's what I've always heard say, and it would explain
why the Gypsies of Spain and North Africa are called Gitanos (<
Egiptanos). Unfortunately, the Gitanos have not kept their language,
so linguistic evidence for a Gitano / Tsigane split is hard to come
by.
