*****GK: Thanks for your insights, Ravi. I confess
that I know very little about the Jats, though I've
picked up a few useful points at jatland.com. One
theory is that they were of "Indo-Scythian" descent,
and that, although not totally committed to the
Brahmanic system (those who are Hindu, since there are
also Muslims, Sikhs, and others) would be considered
as belonging to the "kshatriya" (warrior) label. Now
all this is shrouded in obscurity of course, but I
would see no problem in imagining that one of the
leading groups in Herodotus' Scythia might have been
called after their leading clan, the KATIAR. Instances
of this kind abound. I take it that today most Jats
speak Indic languages? After the work of Trubachov I
don't see any difficulty in assuming that some
components of ancient Scythia might have been Indic.
But so far (as to KAT-) the only thing I have found is
a mention in the Cologne Sanskrit lexicon that KATI
was the name of an ancient Sage.*****

******GK: In Jatland.com I found a note that there are
Jat communities today in Russia, Ukraine, and
Moldova.*****
