Julian was killed in battle. "Soon after his death the rumour
spread that the fatal wound had been inflicted by a Christian in
the Roman army (Eleventh ed. Britannica)". So it's an ancient
anti-Christian rumor revived by the Supreme Council of Gentile
Hellenes.
By the way, there's a really very good fictionalized biography of
Julian by Gore Vidal. The only anachronism I caught in it was in
a description, clearly based on personal observation, of the
approach to Julian's palace in Asia Minor along a road lined with
eucalyptus trees. The trees are there, they have a good Greek
name, so what's wrong?
