It means "root such-and-such". The Brugmannian root *ei- (*h1ei- in the modern notation) means 'go'.

Subject: [tied] Brugmann's Grammar

In Karl Brugmann's book on indo-germanic linguistics, I've been
trying to figure out what the square root sign means beside a word.
Does it mean a PIE root? THe first one in book 4 is square root ei.
Please help me here as i am very stuck.
