True, of course. It's how Robbie Burns
spelt it:
For me, I swear by sun
an' moon,

aboon,

shoon,
Just gaun to see you...
But the pronunciation with [u] is
nevertheless English-influenced, while the most conservative dialects of
Scots have retained a historically regular fronted vowel.
