We have occasional outbreaks in the US. I hear the plural so often that I'm not sure that I ever hear the singular. But then they do tend to come in bunches.
On the other hand, I would doubt that one person in twenty know what a "nit" is, other than something you pick. (Did that ever have a plural in English besides "nits?")
