I think a good number of dithematic names in Germanic (including Theodoric) can be regarded as "loan translations" from Celtic or at least as reflecting the same onomastic pattern which appears to be areal (cf. similar Baltic and Slavic names) rather than strictly inherited.

> To what extent can personal names be surmised to be cognate in the various IE languages? I assume it to be between zero and very little. The extant Brythonic languages have many similarities (with 'Cumbrian' also) and I have been informed that a number of similarites with Goedelic exist, but can we trace any names further back? Seeing as we can trace the name of only one god (I think), would this be to optimistic?

I agree, though I suppose some _types_ of names must be really old (epithetic compound names, certain hypocoristic transformations), even if individual PIE names are nor reconstructible (after all, they were not ordinary lexical items).

I wonder if _any_ unquestionably Tocharian personal names are documented. I know nothing about them at any rate.
