They are not the same (you'll find discussions of the difference in the list archives). Technically, one should refer to Vedic and Classical Sanskrit as varieties of Old Indo-Aryan (= Old Indic), a term that covers both).

I often see the language of the Vedas referred to as Sanskrit.
Are Classical Sanskrit and Vedic Sanskrit the same or distinct
languages ?
If they are distinct languages, is there a standard way to say which
one is being referred to ?
